J..B. BURNETTE  BROKEN ARROW, OK

EX: WN4PPX, WA4PPX, NW5H

I started out in Amateur Radio way back in the 8th Grade, in Dalton, GA. My Science Teacher, Harold Price, K4DCW, is to blame for many years of radio excitement! I spent my days as a Novice, WN4PPX, building power supplies out of old TV chassis and converting an Arc-5 to run 40 meters. I did a lot of other stupid stuff, some worked, some did not. Mainly because I was to naive to know better! Wow, it is a wonder that I didn’t either kill myself or someone else in those days!

As time progressed I passed my General and became WA4PPX, graduated to a tower and a Mosley Classic 33, and a Swan 500 (alligator radio) enjoyed chasing DX, checking into Mars, and doing other Ham stuff. Just a note here, when I turned on the radio and there was a contest on, I quickly turned it off. (You will understand this statement a little later).

Then in 1981 it happened! I transferred to Oklahoma with my job. My plans were to stay here for five years and move back to Georgia. I guess you  can see how well that turned out. I have been in Broken Arrow, OK for 31 years!

During the first few months being in Oklahoma, I ran into K5JZN, Wayne Hudson (aka “Hud”), Now K5ZG. KK5I, Dave Horn (SK), and K7CW, Paul Keissel. Well, these guys were contesters and I knew absolutely nothing about contests. So, I was invited over to K5JZN’s for the CQ WPX contest. I was told I could help log, whatever that meant. So, thirty years later I have turned into a major(?) contester. Oh, somewhere down the line I became NW5H, is that a terrible CW call or what? Then I received my current call of K5PX, much better, but it was my 10th choice when the Vanity calls opened back up!

So, I guess you can say the contest bug bit me. I really enjoy contesting and the bulk of my radio activity is spent in contest operation. I’m not really sure if I could carry on a “ragchew” contact with anyone now. I tend to enter as Single Band, Single OP categories, but every so often we do a multi single. I am Trustee of the “Boomer Contest Club, NN5Z (now that is an exceptional CW call) and use NN5Z during WPX contest. We also use NN5Z during Field Day. I have had relativity good success in WPX. I won the US, Single Op, Low Power, 20 meters in 2000 & 2003. In 2009, I finished 1st in the World for Tri Band, Single Op, Low Power, 20 meters. Sometimes you get lucky!
